At Tree of Life Midwifery, we strive to make obtaining midwifery care as simple and easy as possible, that is why so many services are included in our Midwifery Care Package
Below is a list of the basic services included in the Midwifery Care Package. When possible, I like to surprise my mamas with special pamperings that may not be listed below.

Free Consultation

Free 1 hour consultation You are invited to meet with me to ask questions and discuss any worries you or your family might have regarding homebirth or how I practice. You may find it helpful to take a moment prior to our meeting to write out your questions and fears so nothing is forgotten or left unaddressed. We will discuss your goals and desires for your ideal birth. I want to know how to best help you accomplish your goals. This time may also be used to review your family and medical history and address any concerns about previous pregnancies. A free pregnancy test is available if you need one.

If you decide you would like to hire Tree of Life Midwifery - Jules Johnstun, you will be given a Prenatal Handbook to guide you through the ins and outs of your nurtured pregnancy and homebirth with Jules. The prenatal Handbook contains important information to help you throughout your pregnancy. It is also a great place to keep track of notes, appointment times, dates and questions for future appointments.

Prenatal Care

Don't move a muscle! Jules is coming to you.
At your home prenatal visits your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature) will be assessed and documented. I will test your urine for hydration or any abnormalities. We will discuss how to grow a healthy baby and I may make nutritional or lifestyle recommendations.

A common difference between the Midwifery and Medical Model of Care is the distinction between high touch and high tech. This is why so many of the most effective tools in my tool bag are not actually tools at all.

Touch- I feel your growing baby, measuring your belly for growth and note your baby's position as you prepare for birth.

Listen- I listen to your baby's heartbeat for strength and health. I take my time to hear your questions.

Prenatal visits usually have a light hearted and casual tone, creating an ideal atmosphere to discuss any questions you or your partner may have. I will guide you through your journey by providing education and support. It is my goal for you to feel comfortable and relaxed without compromising safety or the clinical aspects of maternity care. One mama describes, "Prenatal care with Jules is like having the girls over for tea." Prenatal visits are kept relaxed and enjoyable as we focus solely on you and your baby, ensuring you are both thriving, growing and healthy.

Birth Services

Emergency cell phone access to your Midwife. No secretaries or nurses to take messages.

Physical and emotional labor support in the safe serenity of your own home. I am a midwife because I LOVE birth. I cherish the honor to guide and empower women in their most vulnerable yet powerful moment that is birth. While you set the stage, I will actively follow your lead to provide natural/drug free, comforts and suggestions like position changes, massage and counter pressure.

Free use (and clean up) of one of the Deluxe Water Birth Tub Kits. There's nothing fishy around here! Tree of Life's birth pools are specifically designed with the birthing mother in mind. They've thought of everything from the depth and design of the pool to handles and grips in just the right places. Let's not forget the fabulous Personal Back and Belly Massage Jet. It's perfect counter pressure for back labor. The Deluxe Water Birth Tub Kit is included as part of your care with Tree of Life and comes complete with airpump and hoses for set up. We take care of the rest

Thorough monitoring for you and your unborn baby. Portable and Waterproof technology provides us the ability to appropriately assess fetal wellbeing without moving a muscle. I have years of experience and helped hundreds of women, so you can intuitively birth safely and peacefully without sacrificing either.

I have extensive experience welcoming babies in water. Approximately 90% of my mamas choose to birth their babies in water and 99% use some form of aqua therapy in labor. Time and again water proves to be soothing and therapeutic, with an overall, "AHHH..." relaxation response. This option is always available with no added fees or mess to clean up.

While you may choose to not actually birth in water, I encourage my mamas to "listen to your body". When women are allowed to listen and use their intuition they will use many position changes, utilize various comfort techniques and may ultimately reduce the duration and intensity of labor.

Towel Service

Don't ruin the good towels. Use my washcloths, hand towels and mysteriously warm thick luxurious over-sized bath towels. Stay nestled in your bed, snuggle up with your new little one and let me do the laundry and cleaning.

Postpartum Care for Mother and Newborn

  • Breastfeeding guidance in positioning and latch-on techniques
  • Thorough newborn exam after birth (not intended to replace a physicians exam)
  • 24 hour home visit, to ensure well-being and breastfeeding success
  • 3-4 postpartum visits for mom and baby

Blood Testing/Lab Work

Jules is an excellent phlebotomist with over 17 years of experience in venipuncture. Jules does all her own blood draws so there's no need to travel for lab tests. An initial Prenatal Panel will be obtained during the first trimester to determine wellness and blood type. An additional Hemogram is drawn at 28 weeks and may be drawn again closer to the end of your pregnancy to rule out possible risk factors. You will be responsible for all lab fees.
RH- mothers should expect an additional fee of approx. $150 for RhoGam and additional lab work specific to Women with a RH- blood type(ie. ab-, o-, a-, b-).
